Exactly the same problem happened to me on a RedHat 7.2 when updating from Ximian. I guess this is a rare RPM bug, as it occured for me for no apparent reason...

Tough luck :-( The system suddenly did not know about some packages installed, like kernel and glibc - other were present.

I wonder when RPM/Red Hat switches from this slow DBM backend. (Firebird anyone ?:-) Any operation (like rpm -qi) takes a *long* time on my Mandrake box. From a database point of view, this is just horrible.
