Had similiar symptoms here a few weeks ago. rebuilddb never finished (wasn't doing anything visible after a minute or so). I remember to reinstall the rpm packages (using Mandrake's fantastic urpmi tool ;-) ) and then the rebuilddb finished it's job properly. Had no problems since. I don't know what exactly caused this behaviour.
