Backup your data.
echo 4 > /proc/acpi/sleep

to have goodies with ACPI do a:

modprobe ac
modprobe battery
modprobe button
modprobe fan
modprobe processor
modprobe thermal

And play with the files that appear in /proc/acpi/*

Yes, there will be a daemon like apmd that will control that kind of
things, but the userspace is still not done :(
