Mine is working now. I removed me extra font dir from /etc/fonts/fonts.conf 
and added it to /etc/X11/fs/conf (apparently soffice was somehow using one of 
my 3rd party fonts from a CD I copied for the spreadsheet tabs)

Turn on font anti-aliasing in star office or you won't get anything.

For those who can't see any - here's how to get to the anti-aliasing.
6th menu from the left is tools
Last item - Options
First plus
4th item in the tree menu is View
You should be able to see the checkbuttons, One on top left is screen font 
anti-aliasing - check it.
