I'm a scientist, and like Mandrake for its easy-to-use-although-serious 
feature.
Scientists don't care about specialized distributions but care about having 
everything bundled. Mandrake is going in the right direction for that : 
pybliographer, xmgrace, xdrawchem, chemtool, ...

And as far as i know, not so many chemical softwares are GPL, so it's better 
using the known one, and including the newest version.
