Sun more than fund their input to the development of StarOffice from sales of it. People often think $0 == useless, so when Sun started charging, StarOffice deliveries went *up* steeply. However, Sun have OpenOffice.org for people who want 99% of the features of StarOffice but no support. Mandrake should always have a free and a pay-for version, and differentiate between them. I wouldn't mind a free version which was coated in ads for the pay-for-and-supported version, as long as the ads didn't intrude into the day-to-day operation of the services (`This ICMP packet returned by the free version of MNF; the commercial version of MNF offers ICMP replies in a range of colours to suit your decore and ruggedised finishes that will beautify your TCP stack for years to come; redirecting you there now...').
