No, you're right, I was already logged in in X.

Because when you or another user is already logged, the login is as fast as root.
Well, just to be sure I tried as a first login and it takes about 2 seconds.
I remember I had this problem (long time to login) when I tried a test install of 8.2 configured to use ldap as the authentication database, then removed ldap but nsswitch.conf still was configured to look at ldap, and it had to time out before consulting local files.
