I don't think they're leaving it there on purpose,
it's just that /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 hasn't been
updated to deal with the fact that KDM's desktop
program isn't a seperate binary (or at least it hadn't
last I checked, which was a while ago).

Xconsole actually can be useful (and understandable)
to normal users, for instance if you're running
mgetty, it sticks messages in there if you get a fax. 
For most users though, it isn't useful, and for now
you can just edit Xsetup_0 to your liking.

Sure.  I wonder if it's just that Xconsole isn't
capable of handling codes and colors.
