I'm assuming that request was for Michal.

In my case, a system monitor shows that it isn't a hang, it's a loop. Starting
harddrake2 from the command line works fine, giving the "Probing" popup and the
hardware tree display about a second later. Lauching from within drakconf
causes the loop before the "Probing" popup appears.

description:
You just get a "Please wait" and it hangs until you click the cancel button.
Launching drakconf from the command line gives the following stderr when you
click the hardrake button:

TODO: XSetInputFocus if force_focus
TODO: ensure focus stuff

(drakconf.real:2926): Gdk-CRITICAL **: file ../../gdk/gdkdraw.c: line 238
(gdk_drawable_get_display): assertion `GDK_IS_DRAWABLE (drawable)' failed
