upgraded to latest cooker version(3.1-28mdk), but problem is still there.
Can check the box for anti-aliasing, but it has no effect. If I check the box
for sub-pixel hinting as well, then next time i open up font config this box
has gone back to an unchecked state.

normal after exiting. In particular I can't turn on sub-pixel hinting.
