found the cause of the first problem, the default fonts in KDE can't be anti-
aliased (the helvetica fonts). Changing the default fonts solves this problem.

The offending fonts are:

times
new century schoolbook
Lucida typewriter
Lucida Bright
Lucida
Helvetica
Fixed
ClearlyU
Clean
Charter

Still can't enable subpixel rendering
