Hear, hear. To me, a distro should be defined by what it adds, not what it leaves out. I find urpmi and the graphical front end, along with mcc, to represent "Mandrake" to me. Sure, I'm glad that they've picked a preferred desktop -- and that it's KDE, in a Gnome world (cf. RH). Mandrake needs a focus, but that doesn't mean that they have to exclude others when the desire is to give choice, as well. The desktop/WM that I end up using certainly under my control, and I'm glad to see Mandrake continuing to support so many. It's thanks to the broad support/options for the desktop that Mandrake has given that other distros (*cough*) are now refining their desktop experience so much. I think we all know why we're here, on this list as well as with this distro. And I'd be sorry to see the principles that have won me over to Mandrake be changed.
