           Product: Installation
         Component: hardware
           Summary: Bootloader installation failed
           Version: 1.791
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: blocker
          Priority: P1
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was running a version of Mandrake 8 and performed an update to 9.1RC1 on an
Intel-based Dell Optiplex GX110. My hda disk is subdivided into about 5 partitions
with /dev/hda5 as the bootable partition. Installation of all 3 CDs using the update
setting occurred without problem untill the Install Bootloader phase. At that point,
the following error is displayed and there is no obvious
way to recover or fix the problem:
Installation of bootloader failed. The following error occurred:
:Fatal: open /dev/hda: No such file or directory

So somehow it appears to not know that it should be writing to /dev/hda5 and that
/dev/hda is not a valid disk identifier by itself. Since I can no longer boot my
machine, I would be much appreciative of any personal answer on how I can get the
booloader installed properly since everything else is ready to go. Using the rescue
boot setup did not help regardless of kernel chosen; all had the same problem.

Thanks,

Bob Weiner
