I posted most of this to bugtraq, just thought I'd email to this list too
just in case. Mdk's bug tracking system has never inspired a lot of faith
on my part. Anyway, here goes:

Installation

Complaint: The only way I found to choose between what used to be called
"recommended" or "expert" installations is by passing it at the command
prompt. Why is there no graphical way to choose any more?

Complaint: Mandrake 8.x and 9.0 installs used to be downright pretty, with
3d looking buttons and a hotlinked menu on the left side that I could use to
move back and forth if I needed to. This new one looks very sparse and
amateurish - kinda like something I would dream up. It sucks. Hard.

Bug (I think): Lilo installation, even under expert mode, only asks if you
want to install lilo to the mbr or to /boot. What if I've got multiple hard
disks? Which mbr and which /boot is it referring to? Also, the rest of the
lilo config is just plain skipped. Did it add sections for my other OS's?
No way to know till you just cross yer fingers and reboot (or crash and
burn, see next).

Bug: Even though I completely disconnected my printer before installation,
9.1rc1 installation hangs at the "summary" section. Tty3 sez something like
this:

missing module parport_probe
warning: Undefined subroutine &main :: called at
/usr/bin/perl-install/install_steps_gtk.pm line 64

At the tty2 prompt, I tried a "modprobe parport_probe" but got the same
missing module error.

After installation

Complaint: The drakboot section of the Mandrake Control center is confusing.
Near the bottom, I can check to start the gui at bootup, but why must I
select a username and a desktop? Does that activate auto-login, or does it
just set the defaults for the login manager? Also, the state of this
section is not saved between uses. There's a button to configure lilo/grub,
but nothing in there to control WHAT is being booted.

Complaint: The logging console at the bottom of the Mandrake Control center
is neat, but needs to be off when first installed. First of all, the size
of the window isn't big enough to hold it, and Joe Desktop doesn't care what
it sez anyway.

Complaint: The new default login manager again looks sparse and amateurish.
Please, either pretty it up a bit or change it back.

Bug: Manpages don't seem to work at all. Don't know how that could be, but
I can't pull up a single one. Here's the error:

        [EMAIL PROTECTED] jimh]$ man ls
sh: line 1: /usr/bin/less: No such file or directory
        /usr/bin/nroff: line 158: 2300 Done
PATH=$GROFF_BIN_PATH:$PATH groff -mtty-char $T $opts ${1+"$@"}
        2301 Broken pipe | $ICONV
Error executing formatting or display command.
        System command (cd /usr/share/man && (echo ".ll 11.1i"; echo ".pl 1100i";
/usr/bin/bzip2 -c -d '/usr/share/man/man1/ls.1.bz2'; echo; echo ".pl
\n(nlu+10") | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc -c |
/usr/bin/less -isrR) exited with status 127.
        No manual entry for ls

Bug: The "reboot" button on the login manager doesn't work.

Well, that's all I've found so far. On a positive note, my system seems a
little faster loading kde than it was under 9.0.

Sincerely,
Jim Hubbard
