I also have this occur with MKRaid using 9.1rc1. I had (since 8.2) 2 hard
drives with several partitions on each. a total of four partitions were
software mkraid1 then formated md0 /home. The install for mdk 9.0 recongnized
the raid and didn't touch it, however the install for mdk 9.1rc1 didn't
recogized the existing formatted raid and had me make a new one. Which when I
tried to format was told it did not have a hash mark reference. What gives?

Installation of 9.1rc1 on a pc with an Adaptec 2940UW scsi controller and dual
onboard ide interfaces. Has four 9.1 GB scsi drives. All drives are
recognized. Added all four scsi drives to a Level 5 raid array md0. Expert
mode attempt to format the array results in a message "Not a Hash Reference".
Switching to normal mode and clicking on done, the system formats all ide
partitions correctly, but reports "mkraid failed" when attempting to format the
array.
Installation of 8.2 on this computer is successful. System has a SOYO Sy-7VDA
motherboard with a VIA-650 installed.
