For further reference when the radeon 9700 is in the only way to shut down is to hit the power button. If you try to switch to a different terminal to trouble shoot it does not give a command prompt only a blank black screen. I will try to switch video cards to an older 3dfx voodoo 4 4500 to see if this clears the problem up.
