kde sound daemon (artsd) is using your sound card. you should hear sound in kde applications. if you run apps through their menu entries, most multimedia apps should use soundwrapper to disable artds while you use a sound app (game, sound editor, ...) you can try it by runnin eg "soundwrapper xmms" on the cli
