Went to MCC and did the wizard and still could not connect. On hint from Francisco A. I uninstalled Shorewall and was immediately able to connect. From the logs it appears that shorewall is automatically rejecting packets from the host computer and from the firewall/router. Configuration in MCC does not change anything. So the only obvious solution is uninstall shorewall. This would not be obvious to a complete newbie. They would give up in frustration
