The program top indicates that konqueror, fam and kdeinit are sharing the CPU load (and X of course). The problem disappears immediately when a directory other than the home directory is displayed. I have tried setting the value of the default directory to both /home/damon and ~, but this makes no difference. Confusingly, the home directory itself contains entries for ALL users that are on the server this computer authenticates against at login time using ypbind, even though none of them (apart from myself) have ever logged in here. I'm not sure if that has something to do with it.
