You can substitute 1 cup minus 2 TBSP. of Canola or other oil for 1 cup of shortening, and that includes coconut oil, which is a healthy substitution. Of course, you can also substitute 2 sticks of unsalted butter, and I often substitute 1 stick of butter and 1 half cup minus 1 TBSP. of oil for the shortening called for in a recipe (which yields results in terms of texture that are relatively close to that achieved with the shortening).

You can also substitute lard, but I have been unable to find non-hydrogenated lard.

If anyone knows where to find this, I am eager to locate it!

Hi, all,

I'm not a fan of shortening and want to avoid it at all costs. So often, there are so many recipes that I'd love to try, but pass them up because it calls for this ingredient.

So, I'm wondering if other ingredients can be used in it's place; something healthier. Also, if there are substitutions, should certain ones be used in specific recipes?

        Thanks,
