If you want to cook hamburgers on the stove, I would use medium heat to avoid 
burning.  As meat cooks, it gets firm, so you can use the feel as a guide, and 
also timing.  Depending on the thickness of the patty, try about four to five 
minutes on a side.  The sizzle is another way to tell the meat is cooking, as 
it sizzles less, it is cooked.
If you cook on high, it might be too fast, so the meat will cook on the outside 
and be raw in the center.
