I am from the South, and the term Johnny cake refers to a host of cakes made from corn meal in a variety of ways. Johnny cakes are unique to the south. The basic ingredients of Johnny cakes that I've eaten are white or yellow corn meal, water or milk or buttermilk, and salt. See the info from the following Wikipedia address.

I have some cornmeal to use up and a friend wants "johnny cakes". I have no
idea what that is. He thinks it is a square cake that you cut into squares
and serve with syrup poured on them.
Any southern cookes on this list? (smile)
