Hi, Walt, Check the cookies after the shortest time in the recipe. When you touch a cookie lightly with your fingertip, it should spring back if the cookies are done. If it doesn't, leave them in for another minute.
I remember some one on the list suggested doing a test bake with one cookie to determine the bake time for that recipe. You could also do that then you would have a good idea how log they would take to bake. Your reference to smelling them isn't so far off, but there is a certain smell when they are done-hard to describe, but it isn't that of burning. So, trust your nose as well. Good luck!
