I have never heard of foil being unsafe, but a lot of things are bad for your health these days and some of the stuff In the news is controversial. One thing ai like about foil is that I can use it to line my cookie sheets and casserole dishes. It really makes the clean up quite easy.

Other than that, it is perfectly safe. The only thing I use it for is to cover a baking dish for refrigeration. Someone on the list wrote last fall saying she was afraid to use her microwave oven for health reasons. We can't worry about things. All we can do is to do what we know, do what we know or think is safe, and that is all.
