Yes, I've tried it, Charles.  It works, after a fashion.  The amount
of oil doesn't produce the moist kernels I want, but I wouldn't add
any more oil than what is called for.  You get a lot more unpopped
kernels with this method, but that may be because I stop the microwave
too soon.  Sometimes, you can smell the bag start to burn, and that
makes me nervous.  Give it a try, and let us know your results and how
you feel about it.
