This recipe calls for shortening. I think you will be fine to use it. The flavor will be slightly different from using margarine, but both are vegetable oil based. Nothing says sugar cookies have to have sprinkles. But, if you want them, however they turn out is how they were intended in your cookie shop. If some have more or one side has more, that's for people with different tastes. I used to let things like that hold me back in my baking as a blind person. But, when I started listening to people at potlucks and such, generally the ugly dessert is the one eaten. There were two cakes at one, a pretty 9 by 13 and a chocolate layer cake that was leaning from being transported. It was interesting to watch. One piece was taken from the sheet cake and the leaning cake plate was clean.

Ellen, thanks so much for the recipe. You said you use margarine do you
think it would make a big difference if I used Crisco?

Crisp Sugar Cookies
This is my favorite sugar cookie recipe. It is in a book called One Hundred
Cookie Recipes that was put out by the organization that did the old A Leaf
From Our Table book. It was one of the first cookbooks I got in braille. I
made them every Christmas and Easter, but now my Dad isn't around to help me
decorate them. It's hard for me to get the sprinkles on evenly. I have
tried other recipes, but these always come out the best. They make a lot of
cookies so it's worth the effort.
1/2 cup shortening (I always use margerine)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
2 and a half cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Colored Sugar
Cream shortening; add sugar, vanilla and unbeaten eggs, one at a time; beat
until light. Add sifted dry ingredients; mix well. Chill for 2 hours.
Roll thin; cut with floured cutters;sprinkle with sugar. Garnish with nut
halves, raisins or candied cherries if desired. Bake on greased cookie
sheets in 400 degree oven (I do them at 350) for 10 minutes (I do them about
8 minutes). About 5 dozen.

Subject: [CnD] need sugar cookie recipe

My daughter is a teacher and I am making cut out sugar cookies in heart shapes for her class for valentines day. I am in need of a recipe with no milk as some students are Lactose intolerant. I have been looking at the sugar cookie recipes that I usually use but most of them require milk or sour cream. I know I can look on line for one but I would prefer a recipe that has been tried before. Thanks for any recipes!
