Yes, the plates do remove; there is a button on either side of the grill to 
release them. The prices vary. QVC had one for $149 which sounded similar to 
what I got for $119 from Amazon, and I didn't have to pay shipping since I have 
Amazon Prime. To be honest, I can't wait to try it and plan to do so tomorrow.
