I'd rather do it in the microwave, but as long as you keep careful control of the heat you shouldn't hurt it any. If you want to spice the meat sauce up a bit more a packet of Sloppy Joe seasoning will do that well. Sounds like it'll make a very different cottage pie. (Shepherd's pie has lamb in it, if it's beef it's a cottage pie)
