Thanks for the help - the fink versions of coot reset this variable at start up so you need to edit /sw64/bin/coot (which is just a wrapper) to set $COOT_REFMAC_LIB_DIR to /sw64/share/xtal/ccp4-6.2.0/lib but once that's done real space refinement works again.
