Honestly I don't ever look at the tool tips, the button labels are descriptive enough for me Like you said I would gray out all buttons that require maps. However, I would put a dropdown box (above the first button that requires a map)that shows the currently selected map (otherwise drop down to open map.... that triggers the file dialog box). Of course when a map is selected via the drop down box the buttons become enabled. The dropdown box would be the width of the current 'real space refine zone buttons', and then inset the map dependent functions so that the user associates their functions with requiring a map. Now of course this all changes for users who use the buttons that are attached to the main coot window(especially if they have the icon view).... but I'm usually fine with having multiple windows ( I normally interact with Model/Fit/Refine as a separate window).
