I wrote a workaround some time ago into the coot mailing list for ubuntu
12.04. It can be found here:

But I doubt that it will work for 13.10. Interestingly, it seems that
the mesa bug still exists for sandy-/ivy-bridge intel chipsets even
after several distribution upgrades.
