Hi!

I raised this question a few years ago, namely, is it possible to control Coot
with 3DConnexion's SpaceNavigator
(http://www.3dconnexion.com/products/spacenavigator.html). Back then I was on a
Mac, the drivers were somewhat buggy etc, anyway, there wasn't any direct
implementation. As a last resort I tried to bind keys to move the model in Coot
and map those keys to the axes of the navigator. It kind of worked, but it was
rather laggy and cumbersome, so I discarded the idea of using the device with
Coot. It worked fine with some minor quirks in UCSF Chimera, though.

Now I am mostly using a linux (CentOS 6.3) workstation. I found out there is a
3rd party driver written for the device called spacenavd
(http://spacenav.sourceforge.net) which should be much better than the software
provided by 3DConnexion. I gave it a go and got it working, at least with
Chimera. Now I'm thinking again it would be sweet if the navigator worked in
Coot as well. I couldn't find any solutions on the internet, but quite a few
people who would also like this feature to be implemented.

I would try and do it myself if it wasn't for the lack of coding skills.
Nevertheless, I would be glad to test and help develop this implementation if
there was anyone willing to take the lead. Anyone ready to team up?

Cheers,
