The Mitegen Zeiss V41 has approximately the same optical magnification range as the EMZ5, and is listed at $2050. The mag range is a little low for my taste (I like something that will go to 80-90X), especially for 96-well robotic plates, but it is a very affordable scope. I've never used one in the lab, but have seen it at meetings. It seems OK. Uses an LED backlight system. You get what you pay for. I think a quality Nikon or Olympus scope is money well spent. My SZX-12 has been a tank, standing up to constant abuse from students for 13 years.

Cheers,

Hello all,

I am looking into getting a microscope for the inspection of crystals with a
large stage. I currently have the Meiji EMZ5 microscope with PBH stand and a
special acrylyc cover to make the stage large. However, the company that made
the cover for me no longer makes those covers.
What other microscope can I use? or is there a place that makes custom covers
for meiji microscopes?
I would like to get a microscope for no more than $2000 for the sole purpose of
crystal inspection.

Thanks,
Adeba
