Query/suggestion - the default gtk font on Mac is "Sans 9". This is fine, except if you have chains named both "l" and "I" in your protein, in which case it causes much confusion (as the chain IDs are virtually indistinguishable without serifs).
I have changed this in the /Library/Coot/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to gtk-font-name = "Serif 9", which works fine - maybe this should be the default? Or maybe there is a better serifed font to use? I know it is not as pretty, but it saves some confusion in this particular scenario. Best, Oliver.
