that should be .coot.py - presumably that's what you meant (but if not, it would explain why it didn't work)



.coot-preferences is a directory and its contents should not be edited by the user.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? I made a mistake about this directory years ago and have regretted it since.

Future Coots will have:

$HOME/.coot/

       preferences/               # these are scripts written by Coot

       startup-scripts/           # these are scripts that you write



Both .coot and coot.py should reside in the user's home directory.

.coot.py yes.
