It would be better if Coot could exit more elegantly when it can't start the graphics (I've looked into it, but didn't see how). Maybe you are trying to run Coot remotely? If so, this is not a Coot problem, it to do with remote graphics. Try running glxgears - if that works then Coot graphics should work.
