There's a lot of effort that goes on behind the scenes converting Coot source code into binaries that can work on your computers. The technical expertise of these people is profound and extensive and largely overlooked.

Recently I have been working with "eunos-1128" (I don't actually know his(? I presume) actual name) to get coot working with conda. Before that I spent time with Alex Mycko and Andrius Merkys putting the package in order for scrutiny by the Debian legal team.

In 2021 I got a message from Yoshitaka Moriwaki who was interested in getting Coot working in homebrew. Years and years of correspondence - and literally hundreds of message eventually we bashed the bird into shape and now it is routinely available - and frequently quickly updated to the new release.

In the early days, before github - maybe even before the SBGrid, the distribution system was on mac that we used was Fink. And the Fink maestro was Bill Scott. Much shared pleasure and pain at finagling a not-well-described build system. He took on projects other than Coot and for many years his site was the only place to get much of structural biology software on a Mac.

Thanks Bill.

Paul.
