Rather that use HADOOP-3227, I think it would be better to extend HADOOP-3149
to have a method to get a file handle. Something like:
{code}
FSDataOutputStream createSideFile(String name) throws IOException;
{code}
and the file will be managed by the output format, reside in the output dir, be
named relative to the task, etc.
Does that sound reasonable?
