chmod -H (under BSD, at least):
-H If the -R option is specified, symbolic links on the command line
are followed. (Symbolic links encountered in the tree traversal
are not followed by default.)
This likely only makes sense if the symlink is pointing to the local file
system or another HDFS, though.
