PulseAudio has a CoreAudio backend, and as such can play (theoretically) the role on OS X that it also plays on Linux, to the same applications it serves on Linux, those which don't support CoreAudio themselves. One thing that I hope to achieve is playback and capture device selection in KDE applications on OS X, and preferably by improving existing supported frameworks (PulseAudio and/or Phonon) rather than writing something from scratch.
