Well, however this will roll, I just discovered that KDE's audio kcm (control 
panel) won't build without libpulse. Sound playback apparently works though 
when I move the PA daemon aside and have the vlc phonon backend configured 
(with VLC built almost normally for OS X). Right now I cannot think of a gnome 
app I might have installed that does sound production. The epiphany browser 
maybe, if I knew where to find a sound bite that doesn't require flash or some 
other plugin, these days.
