Thanks. That seems to be exactly what I was looking for. 

I am using the ‘play and record’ category. This is an app where the audio 
quality is important. I would expect most users to be using headphones, but it 
should function properly even through the main speaker. I didn’t realize that 
the play and record category would route to the phone speaker by default.
