Len Sweeney kindly sent me a condensed copy of the topic thread as I was having difficulty following it. I was glad to read the Cunningham snippet was from an article in JSTOR. I have access to that source through my public library but it doesn't open up for me automatically. James raised a question I hadn’t considered. Did the inmates' children live in prison along with their incarcerated parents? Could the GAOL school have been for them? Little Dorrit, in which a girl was born and raised in Marshalsea prison comes to mind. Dickens’ book was about 1855 I think. Not that far off from the date of the document discussed in this post.
