One day my mechanic cleaned the mixture control portion of my carb and we wired it to work.
At first, trying to lean by ear, I couldn't get much control. The RPM drop and sound gave me such a fuzzy "peak" that I couldn't do it well enough to trust my technique. I bought a large scale EGT from K&S Engineering. It's one of those with BIG distances between the marks. Twenty five degrees is big on this scale. This kind of gauge has an adjustment knob you use to bring it back if it goes off scale, high or low, due to power setting or conditions. After leaning to the desired temp, you rotate the knob to put the needle on a big reference mark so any deviations become glaringly obvious. With this gauge, I can reliably find the peak EGT and set my lean at 100 degrees rich of peak EGT for max power. I can also set it to 50 degrees rich of peak for cruise. The scale is large enough on the meter, I can control it to 10 degree increments. With my Stromberg carb, I find I have to make my adjustments slowly and pause to see the effects but I have good control even with my push-pull knob. For your high altitude part of the country I WOULD NOT be without an ACCURATE, LARGE SCALE EGT and a working mixture control. They tell me it makes a significant difference in actual power production up high. I can, with my climb prop, always get to 12,500 feet with only one exception: The "highest" I've ever been in my Coupe was at 11,500 feet on a VERY hot Nevada desert afternoon with turbulence and density altitude of 14,500. Just wouldn't climb any more that afternoon. As a side benefit, you get a lot better gas mileage when you lean in cruise. In your area, you are always high enough to make leaning worth the effort. -- Ed (the flatlander who's only gone on one 2,000 mile mountain trip but who just likes to cruise high in the smooth, cool air) Burkhead Peoria, Ill.
