$500 seems high for a pre-purchase. At $50/hr (my mechanic bills at $49/hr) that is 10 hours which is a lot. I worked with my local mechanic on the pre-purchase when I bought my coupe in 1990 and my recollection is we spent five or six hours (a long time). But wait I say - I never throw out anything. Here is my receipt.
My presale inspection of N2679H on 6-16-90 cost $139.00 ($125 in labor and $14 in oil) It looks like my mechanic charged me a flat fee. I have four pages of squacks. I have seen flat rate annuals that cost less than 500. Have you asked him/her why it costs that much? My first annual on 8-2-1990 cost $1340.92 (15.32 hours - $536.20 in labor) and was VERY extensive. My second annual inspection cost $968.00 in 1991. $457 for pabor (12.37 hours) and $164.69 in parts and it was fairly extensive. I just noticed that my last annual 2-23-99 (yup, got another one coming up) was a flat rate of $470.00 You could offer to help by opening all the inspection ports, doing an AD search and removing the interior. I would expect a coupe pre-purchase to be significatly less than a Cessna 150 since it has no electric flaps or vacuum systems.
