I think you've hit on a key aspect of the gross weight change. I remember hearing discussion relative to this point.
The CAA did add a few not too terribly expensive things to do to upgrade the fleet of C models to the D to get the benefit of the added gross weight and, as you say, the D model is under the Normal category. The limitations of the D model's up elevator travel were related to the in flight testing, Fred Weick told me. -- Ed Burkhead Peoria, Ill.
