Your serial number should have had the float guage that included a round
glass dial in the cockpit (lower left wing root).

However the earliest coupes used a float guage with a wire that stuck up
through the gas cap on the left wing as well as the header tank.  Since
this
was legal on some serial numbers it should be legal on yours.  FAIK Erco
may
even have used the same cap and float that goes on the header tank, you
might want to give it a try.

If it works, show him the float guage and a picture of an early coupe with
one.  (You could always put the normal cap back on later but to phrase a
great American "that would be wrong")
