Ercoupe Glider Club Member. First time 1977. Fueled plane north of
Rome, Ga
on cold day, climbed to 3000 msl, motor quit! Tried primer, motor would
run
but
only for a moment, landed in very small field, hit fence post, cartwheeled
airplane. Plane destroyed. 1946 415-C N94382 SN 1605. FAA said dirt
or
ice in carb, fuel starvation. Second time 1985. Oil line broke , shot
oil
on
exhaust pipes, cabin filled with smoke. THANK GOD I WAS IN A ERCOUPE!
Opened
side windows put head outside. I would not have made it if I was in a
Cessna
or Piper!!! I was only about 4 mi from Clow Airport, Plainfield, IL.
After
landing I checked the oil. I lost 3 quarts in a VERY short time! This was
a
forced landing not a glider ride but I wanted you all to know the moment
you
smell smoke in a Ercoupe open the window and get your head out! Plane:
1946
415-C N3344H. Third time: 1986: Fuel drain on gas bowl by motor
poped
out at 1500 mls. The part you push in to drain the gas from the headed
tank
shot out of the housing. After 40 years of draining the headed tank, the
brass
tip that holds it in the houseing wore out and it shot out. GAS
EVERYWHERE!!!
Cork started down!!!! I was about 6 miles from Naper- Aero, Naperville,
IL. I landed. Turned motor off moment I was on the ground!!!. Jumped
out
of
plane!!! GAS EVERYWHERE. Header tank ran dry. THANK GOD NO FIRE!!! This
was
a
forced landing not a glider ride, but I wanted you all to know about
replacing
that drain once in a while. Plane: 1946 415-C N2695H. Fourth time:
1986: Primer line broke at 2000 msl. GAS running on legs. 10 mi from
Clow
Airport, Plainfield, IL. Landed. This was a forced landing also. Fifth
time:
1988: Took off from small grass strip at Prairie Lake Hunt Club,
Marseilles,
IL. Got about 100' up, motor quit!!! Put nose down, landed ahead at end
of
runway. This happened VERY FAST!!! Ran off the end of the runway. No
damage
to plane. This was the year for record heat in IL! It was over 100
air
temp
and very windy. But the wind was right down the runway. I got in the
plane
and took off right away. I did not let it warm up at all. I was very
warm
and
wanted to get going. I think a got VAPOR-LOCK!!! After the FREE glider
ride!! I gave it a shot of primer, the motor started up and I taxied
back
to
the ramp. I drained all the sumps, ran it on the ground for awhile. It
ran
good
so I took off AGAIN!!! Talk about a scared pilot!!! That was me that
day!!!
Making the same take off only about a half hour after the Glider ride!!
Plane: 1965 Alon A-2 N6557Q SN 57 This may sound like a lot of
mishaps, but I have over 7000 hours of flying Ercoupes all over the
country. gene martin
