Greg,

Please Look at the Service Memorandums again.....

In My Univair Book -Service Memorandum #56 Dec, 1948, says that an
Ercoupe
with weights should have no more than 7/16 play in the aileron control
system, measured at between the trailing edges of the ailerons:

2nd Para. "For the aileron system, the total play between one aileron and
the
other should not exceed 7/16 inch at the trailing edge. This can best be
checked by neutralizing the controls and securing one aileron in line with
the center section trailing edge and moving the the other aileron to take
up
all play, checking the amount of movement of the trailing edge with
respect
to the center section trailing edge at this time. In checking motion, care
should be taken not to exert sufficient force to deflect some of the
members
and thereby getting a false reading. The pressure of the little finger of
one
hand applied at the trailing edge of the aileron is sufficient to take up
all
of the slack. If the resulting motion is greater than 7/16 of an inch, all
the joints and bearings should be checked and those which are loose should
be
tightened or replaced."

Now if you want to remove the balance weights...seeService Memorandum #57,
October 11, 1949... The weights can be safely removed...:...:

para 2.: "As a result of recent tests and analysis, it had been
determined
that the aileron weights on Ercoupes may be removerd and the aileron will
still maintain freedom from flutter throughout the operational range of
the
airplane. providing the aileron free play does not exceed 5/16 inch."

Para 3.: ......last sentence on how to measure play :: ( See Service
Memorandum No. 56)

Now these are quotes from My copy of the Ercoupe Service and Memorandum
manual. Be happy to fax a copy if needed, but hightly suggest erery coupe
owner purchase a copy from Univair (1-888-433-5433) or from Skyport
(1-800-624-5312). You need to know about all the changes supposed to have
been made, and the reasons involved for your coupe.
