Greg...

the Green Stuff.....I had an episode of green stuff....

I had been using Amoco 93 octane Clear super, etc, etc for over 10
years....Just before the green stuff occured, I noticed an asphalt smell
in
the fuel...not typical of Amoco ...Didn't give it much thought.

The Airplane sat several months without fresh fuel being added.. On
checking
the sumps, I began to get a green slime....also a green sludge on the
underside of my fuel caps..

I sent samples to Amoco....they responded with " Can't help"...., very
little
interest.

I think what happened is this:

Gasoline is shipped by pipeline from refineries in the big inch
pipe...along
with kerosene, jet fuel, fuel oils, other gasolines, etc. The slug of
product
is separated by a "contaminated zone". At the storage tank farm, the
contaminated slug is removed....supposedly so that all potential
contaminated
fuel is removed, and that fuel is re-refined, and used as industrial
fuels.

Now, I think what happened, was that the contaminated fuel was not
processed
properly, and some of the kerosene/jet fuel/bunker fuel, etc. remained in
my
dose of Amoco. That was the asphalt smell I noticed.

Now fuel oils grow algae...... Jet fuels now have algecides added at the
refinery...until lately, the re-fuler added algacide when
refueling...PRIST

I drained my tanks, and flushed them , and added 100 LL....and have not
had
green sludge growing on the underside of my fuel caps, but still get some
limited amount of green in the sump check along with condensation water.
...I
did add Prist to my fuel tanks, but wish now that I had not only drained
them, but maybe even steam cleaned them. May do that yet.

I never experienced the problem in the 18 years I have owned the coupe,
until
this episode; and have used auto fuel Amoco Clear, since EAA approval STC.

Now, until I am flying more hours, and refueling on a regular basis, I
will
continue to use 100 LL, as I think it is more Algae proof.... Not so sure
about that, tho.

I did not take samples to the lab and see algae cellular structure, but it
sure looks like algae, and it grows in the tanks. I do have pictures of
the
green stuff, and maybe a dried sample...
